A traditional realist,
Peter R. Dooley specializes in rural landscapes and Great Lakes nautical scenes. He has developed a "purist" style in his work combining simple compositions with bright, crisp transparent colors. The simplicity gained by eliminating detail permits the viewer to fantasize about the subject matter, creating more interest in the painting.

Born in Milwaukee, Peter developed an interest in art at an early age by observing his father, an artist in the Federal Art Project in the 1930's. Peter studied fine art at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Following his education, he served as an illustrator and photographer in the U.S. Marine Corps. Later, graphic arts became his full-time work, and he continued his study of watercolor at Edgewood College in Madison, Wisconsin.

Peter's artwork is included in many private collections, and his unique style has earned him numerous awards in Wisconsin and Illinois. His work was reproduced in the 1992 Marshfield (WI) Clinic Art Calendar and on the cover of the 1991 Manitowoc-Two Rivers Chamber of Commerce magazine. Paintings are included in the permanent collections of the Racine (WI) Library Circulating Art Department, the Marshfield Clinic, the Sauk County Court House, the Waukesha Library, and the Hinsdale (IL) Center for the Arts.

Peter is a member of The Wisconsin Alliance of Artists and Craftspeople, The Madison Art Guild, The Racine Art Guild, and the Geneva Lake Art Association. He exhibits his work at art fairs sponsored by these organizations and at other fairs in Wisconsin and Illinois.

When not painting, Peter frequently plays cards with his wife, Loretta, and their cat, Zeke. The cat usually wins.
